Housing is key in City of Peterborough Draft Official Plan

July 10, 2019 – Peterborough and the Kawarthas Association of REALTORS® (PKAR) is encouraged to see a focus on growth and development in the draft City of Peterborough Official Plan. With a projected population increase 39% from 2016 to 2041, a clear blueprint for housing and transportation development will benefit all residents of our city.

The City’s support of affordable housing (including subdivisions, small construction, and tiny homes) is a critical component in support of sustainable growth. “PKAR stands firm in our belief that everyone deserves a place to call home.” Cathy Burningham, President PKAR. “The City’s plan to accommodate those seeking affordable housing, like young people and seniors, helps to make dream of home ownership a reality for many residents of Peterborough.”

The waiving of development charges for secondary suites is an exciting shift for those in or entering the rental market. With the city operating at such a low vacancy rate waiving these development charges should encourage development and, ideally, help to alleviate the stress of securing rental housing.

Finally, a strategy for transportation that addresses a range of requirements, from active transportation to transit and beyond, is key to supporting the economic growth or our city and keeping our citizens moving.
